J. Kriste, or Master of Disguise is a Cypriot and his real name is Lefteris Moumtzis. He's a songwriter, composer, prefers to write in english, and he orchestrates for and performs with more than 15 musicians and applauders by his side. We can even name a few, Dimitris Baslam, Alkinoos Ioannides, Manolis Famellos,Stelios Romaliades (Luup) and others. So what does this all mean? What is it about? Why is there a man in a golden dress standing on stilts in the middle of a deserted seashore? This is all too weird, you say, and it gets even weirder when the first few verses kick in. 'Girls, Ghosts and Gods' can generally be described as an album built on folk, even folk-rock ballads with a touch of the blues. What we mean by 'folk' or 'folk rock', is the long-standing Anglo-saxon genre that started growing in the 60s with legendary bands and songwriters like Fairport Convention and Donovan, and survived through every other consecutive decade to successfully reach ours. But just to put things straight, this album is not overanxious to please the roots of this tradition by reliving them, rather it reconstructs its values in an entirely contemporary perspective, which is based on innovative, low-profile modifications. In one of the finest tracks of the album, "Duke (Great Ungiver)", Moumtzis strives for and succeeds in capturing the spaciness of today's north-european folk (not far from Lisa O Piu, just to give an example), while in tracks like 'Keeper of Joy' he reveals a unique quality in opening doors into crazy long backdrops of psychedelia. Generally speaking, the second half of the album stands on a higher level (despite the beauty of previous, mellower songs like 'Treesong'), with 'Prayer' and 'Godly Gift' extending and developing the vibe of this fairytale drama.

Ο J.Kriste ή Master of Disguise είναι Κύπριος και το πραγματικό του όνομα είναι Λευτέρης Μουμτζής. Είναι τραγουδοποιός, γράφει μουσικές, στιχουργεί στην αγγλική, ερμηνεύει και ενορχηστρώνει, έχοντας δίπλα του περισσότερους από 15 παίκτες και... χειροκροτητές. Θέλετε ονόματα; Δημήτρης Μπασλάμ, Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης, Μανώλης Φάμελλος, Στέλιος Ρωμαλιάδης (Luup), Χρήστος Αλεξόπουλος κ.ά. Τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει; Περί τίνος πρόκειται; Τι εξώφυλλο είναι αυτό, με τον χρυσοντυμένο ξυλοπόδαρο στην έρημη ακρογιαλιά; Παράξενα πράγματα... τα οποία γίνονται ακόμη πιο παράξενα με τις πρώτες, κιόλας, στροφές του άλμπουμ. Το “Girls, Ghosts and Gods” [Puzzlemusik] είναι, γενικώς, ένα έργο με μπαλάντες. Folk ή folk-rock – ακόμη και το blues, έτσι όπως το αντιμετωπίζει ο Μουμτζής, folk ή folk-rock είναι –, εντάσσεται από την αρχή στη μεγάλη παράδοση του αναλόγου αγγλοσαξωνικού στυλ, εκείνου που έπιασε αρχή στα χρόνια του ’60 με τα μεγάλα συγκροτήματα (Fairport Convention και τα σχετικά) και τους, αντιστοίχως, εξέχοντες τραγουδοποιούς (Donovan και τα σχετικά), διατρέχοντας όλες τις επόμενες δεκαετίες· ναι, φθάνοντας στον καιρό μας. Φυσικά, το άλμπουμ δεν αφορά σε τίποτα παρωχημένες αναβιώσεις, απ’ αυτές που τροφοδοτούν χαμερπή προσδόκιμα, αλλά σε μία παντελώς σύγχρονη «κατασκευή», στην οποίαν είναι ενταγμένοι άψογοι low-profile μοντερνισμοί. Σ’ ένα από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια του άλμπουμ το “Duke (Great ungiver)” o Μουμτζής προσεγγίζει, αγγίζει και κατακτά το «στοναρισμένο» κλίμα του σύγχρονου βορειο-ευρωπαϊκού folk (κοντά στις εγγραφές της Lisa O Piu φερ’ ειπείν), ενώ σε track όπως το “Keeper of joy” φανερώνει μία μοναδική ικανότητα στο να δίνει πλήρη «έξοδο» σε... χρονοβόρες ψυχεδελο-καταστάσεις. Γενικώς, η... δεύτερη πλευρά του άλμπουμ (το δεύτερο ημίωρο χονδρικώς) στέκεται πολύ ψηλά – αν και τα πιο «ωραία» κομμάτια, σαν το mellow εισαγωγικό “Treesong” είναι μπροστά – με το “Prayer” και το “Godly gift” να επιτείνουν την αξία του... παραμυθοδράματος.
